• 1st Meeting of the 2021-2022 year with Prof. Birol Dindoruk

    We hope you had a relaxing summer! On behalf of the Board of Directors of SPE Golden Gate Section, we'd like to invite you to attend our 1st meeting in the SPE year of 2021-2022. The meeting will be on Tuesday, September 14 starting at 11:00 am. Since it is still not safe to have large in-person gatherings, we will keep our meetings virtual for now.

    Fluid properties are central to almost all the applications either directly or in the form of input in various ways. In reservoir studies, from material balance calculations to simulation, fluid properties are always required to estimate in place volumes, EOR potential, CCS, and the transport parameters that interact/coupled with the flow. The variations of PVT properties during depletion phase are also needed to evaluate the reservoir performance and to design surface and subsurface facilities, or even surveillance diagnostics. In recent years, rising number of offshore projects, unconventionals and encountering difficult fluids, (including CCS and geothermal fluids) have made the data requirements and modeling of reservoir fluid properties even more important and at times very challenging. Some of the frequently encountered issues as well as certain non-routine type of data and measurement requirements will be highlighted, including but not limited to unconventionals, OBM contamination, near-critical systems, grading, kinetic effects and some elements of integration towards the objectives. Fundamental measurement/surveillance and computational techniques practiced in this area have immense potential applications in many areas of engineering both today and in the future.

    About the Speaker

    Dr. Birol Dindoruk is currently American Association of Drilling Engineers Endowed Professor of Petroleum Engineering at University of Houston, previously he was the Chief Scientist of Reservoir Physics and the Principal Technical Expert of Reservoir Engineering in Shell. His technical contributions have been acknowledged with many awards during his career, including SPE Lester C. Uren Award (2014), Cedric K. Ferguson Medal (1994), and Distinguished Membership. In 2017, he was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering for his significant theoretical and practical contributions to enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration. He was one of the Distinguished Lecturers of SPE for 2010-2011 term. Dr. Dindoruk was Data Science and Engineering Analytics Technical Director of the SPE and a member of the Advisory Committee of the SPE Reservoir Dynamics and Description Technical Discipline. He has been active in various editorial positions under SPE and also Elsevier. Currently he is the Editor In Chief for all SPE Journals. Dr. Dindoruk is well-known for his extensive work on thermodynamics of phase behavior/EOS development and experimental work, interaction of phase behavior and flow in porous media, enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration, and correlative methodologies.

    Recently, Dr. Dindoruk has also been working in the area of data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning and focusing on effective incorporation of data sciences into the oil and natural gas industry practices and energy systems. In recent years, he has authored/co-authored various articles for hydrogen, geothermal systems and adsorptive storage.

    Dindoruk has 28 years of industrial experience, holds a BSc Degree from Technical University of Istanbul in Petroleum Engineering, MSc Degree from The University of Alabama in petroleum engineering and also a PhD from Stanford University in Petroleum Engineering and Mathematics, and an MBA from University of Houston.

    The October meeting will kick off our Data Science and Engineering Analytics Initiative in our Section. We are excited to announce that we will have Reynaldo Gomez, the Energy Manager from NVIDIA to speak on Oct 22.  Reynaldo has oil and gas experience as a geophysicist with Schlumberger and data science experience with IBM before joining NVIDIA.
