I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and found time to relax, recharge, and spend time with family and friends. As summer comes to a close, I am excited to welcome you back to another year of engagement, learning, and networking with the SPE Fort Worth Section. We have an excellent line up of speakers and events for this season.

Our section continues to thrive because of the enthusiasm, generosity, and engagement of the Fort Worth oil and gas community. Last year was especially rewarding as our 41st Annual Golf Tournament and 26th Annual Clay Shoot raised thousands of dollars to support scholarships for students pursuing careers in the energy industry. These funds help invest in the next generation of petroleum professionals, and I would like to sincerely thank our sponsors, volunteers, participants, and supporters who made these events such a success.

We are kicking off the season with our September 24 luncheon meeting, featuring Todd Guidry of Core Laboratoriespresenting "Introduction to Reservoir Fluids and How Good Is That PVT Study?" Todd is a subject matter expert in reservoir fluids and will discuss PVT studies and their impact on the design and development of oil and gas projects. I encourage all members to attend and help us start the year strong.

Please note that our September meeting will be held at the Fort Worth City Club rather than the Petroleum Club. We will return to the Petroleum Club for our October meeting.

We also look forward to our 43rd Annual SPE Fort Worth Golf Tournament on October 23 at Squaw Creek Golf Club. Whether you are an avid golfer, a sponsor, or simply looking for a great opportunity to network with fellow professionals, we hope to see you there. Lastly, I would like to offer a few thoughts on the current state of our industry. As commodity prices continue to impact not only our country but economies around the world, let the volatility serve as a reminder of the importance of the work we do and the role energy plays in supporting modern life. It is my hope that these market dynamics help reinforce the value of maintaining stable, reliable, and affordable sources of energy.

As the price of a barrel swings up and down, it is important for our industry community to remain connected and engaged. Through SPE, we can learn from one another, share technical knowledge, develop future leaders, and strengthen the professional relationships that make our industry successful.

WT is a powerful mathematical framework that decomposes complex, non-stationary signals into their time–frequency components, exposing transient events and subtle dynamic features that the conventional methods often overlook. We have successfully applied this to analyze a vast continuous stream of spatial and temporal upstream data to reveal the underlying physics of subsurface events critical to O&G upstream operations.

In this webinar, we will showcase WT applications to hydraulic fracturing, reservoir management, and drilling.  We have used it to determine the fracture propagation events, advanced water-hammer modeling, improved fracture-closure during DFITs, and inter-well connectivity dynamics in waterflooding systems. Integrating WT further with machine learning, analytical modeling, and reservoir simulation, researchers have predicted microseismic activity from fracture treating-pressure data and mapped injector–producer connectivity. The same framework has also been applied to identify natural fractures from drilling parameters and to differentiate between induced and natural fracture networks.

We further show the pathways where WT can enable integration across diverse upstream operations—including well testing, production surveillance, artificial lift diagnostics, etc., and be coupled with fiber-optic sensing to empower real-time decision-making in complex subsurface systems—marking a transformative step in the digitalization of upstream operations.

Abstract

Wells’ capital cost is often half of a field development cost. NPV reflecting both the CapEx and OpEx with production revenues needs to be constantly improved to compete with declining green energy costs and increasing reservoir access challenges. Transforming siloed operations between field planning, well construction, production, and abandonment to updating the reservoir models to locate future wells, to a unified data management leading to information transparency and agile execution, can accomplish this.

Produced water—once seen as waste—can become a resource through circular management (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover). This presentation highlights successful treatment and Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) applications enabling reuse in desalination, oil recovery, and fracturing. Concentrated rejects are repurposed for drilling, mineral and lithium extraction, and CO₂ mineralization, linking water reuse to carbon reduction and the UN SDGs on clean water, clean energy, and climate action.
